About Moncyte Health
Quantification of cellular drivers of inflammation— Foamy Monocyte Analysis from Biobank Samples
Chronic inflammation driven by lipid-accumulation in immune cells is a central mechanism in atherosclerosis, cancer and metabolic disorders. However, these inflammatory cues are difficult to detect with existing biomarker tools. MONCYTE Health's foamy monocyte quantification service makes this biology measurable from a single blood sample.
Foamy monocytes are circulating immune cells that have actively taken up excess lipoproteins, accumulated intracellular lipid droplets, and transitioned into a pro-inflammatory state directly implicated in atherosclerotic plaque formation and progression. Their presence and abundance in circulation reflect both the lipid metabolic activity of the immune system and its relation to disease, e.g. plaque burden.
MONCYTE Health provides this analysis as an add-on service for biobank researchers working with cardiovascular, metabolic, or immune-focused cohorts. The service is compatible with frozen peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) as well as fresh white blood cell samples available through the Finnish Blood Service Biobank.
Each sample is processed through MONCYTE Health's validated cellular imaging and analysis platform, which combines high-resolution microscopy, automated image analysis, and AI-assisted quantification. Researchers receive a structured data report including a per-sample foamy monocyte burden score, the absolute count of lipid-droplet-positive monocytes, and a quantitative measure of lipoprotein uptake activity — providing a multidimensional cellular profile ready for integration into downstream statistical analyses. In addition, inflammatory cytokine production can be quantified from the same cell populations. Together, these readouts enable unprecedented insight into inflammatory processes which are not only relevant for cardiovascular disease but also other disease areas.
For research teams requiring support in interpreting results within their specific biological or clinical context, MONCYTE Health offers scientific interpretation consulting as an additional service.
This service is designed for researchers and industrial partner who are interested in how inflammatory processes contribute to disease progression in cardiovascular and other areas — whether for hypothesis generation, subject stratification, biomarker discovery, or translational research.
