Data retrieved from the Finnish health and social care registries may be more representative compared to other countries. This is partly due to the universal healthcare system. Everyone living in Finland is entitled to public healthcare. For this reason, the information contained in the Finnish social and healthcare registries is not skewed in terms of any selection criteria, but the registries cover the entire Finnish population. Recording data in healthcare registries is mandatory, which increases completeness and reliability.\",\"marks\":[],\"data\":{}}]},{\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\",\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"nodeType\":\"text\",\"value\":\"\\nAll individuals in the Finnish Population Information System have a personal identity code, used for identification and communication between registries. The medical, socioeconomic, and life-event related data, such as diagnoses, inpatient and outpatient contacts, procedures, in and outpatient medications, sick leaves, disability pensions, socioeconomic status, and number of children, may be combined and explored in Finland.\\n\",\"marks\":[],\"data\":{}}]},{\"nodeType\":\"heading-4\",\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"nodeType\":\"text\",\"value\":\"Lymphoma study combined data from six data controllers\",\"marks\":[],\"data\":{}}]},{\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\",\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"nodeType\":\"text\",\"value\":\"\\nIn cooperation with Medaffcon, the University of Eastern Finland studies Finnish Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma patients. The study includes all lymphoma patients in Finland over a period of twenty years and matched non-lymphoma controls. The research data is unique, as it combines data from six data controllers, including socioeconomic data from Statistics Finland. As examples, comorbidity, fertility, and family status are explored in this project. \",\"marks\":[],\"data\":{}}]},{\"nodeType\":\"paragraph\",\"data\":{},\"content\":[{\"nodeType\":\"text\",\"value\":\"\\nThe first part of the study, analyzing survival rates of patients with classical Hodgkin's lymphoma in Finland, was published in the Blood Cancer Journal in the autumn 2024. Survival rates in patients with Hodgkin's lymphoma were excellent though still lower than those of the control group. Of the younger patients (<50 years) 96.6% were alive five years after diagnosis and 90.9% after twenty years. Survival rates in older patients (>50 years) were significantly lower than in controls, with only 55.1% alive at five years after diagnosis. Survival of the older patients has not improved, partly due to the increasing age of the patients and related treatment challenges. However, among younger patients’ survival has improved since 2010, likely due to advances in salvage therapies.
